CoP Lecture 3 - Type - Production and Distribution

In this next lecture we looked at Type 
'what language looks like'  
Typography is a type of communication method (get it 'type' of..haha)

The first true alphabet was Greek and with further development it became Latin where most our languages come from today.
 
 

 Elementary education Act 1870
Schooling, all kids from 5 - 12
 
 

The Bauhaus 1919 -1933 form vs function
Helvetica - 'neutral' and 'open to interpretation'
Modernism - influential-

Function dictated form. 25 years is the max time that a design is protected by intellectual property before it lapses
25 years later - Microsoft releases own font - Arial (very similar to Helvetica)
1990 - print
changed to digital than just analogue

Gotham typespace -  popular 
Brand, identity, promo etc

Comic Sans was created by Microsoft worker in 1994.
IE was 
used from 1995 onwards and uses Arial and CS fonts
